Study Abroad

So you’re interested in study abroad? You are about to embark on a life-changing experience!

The Study Abroad Office has a plethora of resources available to students to learn more about programs, financial aid, and more. You can also meet with Ashton Croft, the Study Abroad Advisor for the College of Sciences, or attend walk-in advising.

Once you have completed a Study Abroad 101 orientation , selected a program, and met with your academic advisor, it is time to get your courses approved!

The course approval process takes time. Complete the steps below and share your Google Doc with Dana Thomas (dcthoma4@ncsu.edu), at least 2 weeks before the Study Abroad deadline.

  1. Use your degree audit to be sure you know which degree requirements are unmet. Meet with your academic advisor if you have questions.
  2. View the website for the abroad program and select coursework that will fulfill unmet requirements.
  3. Open the Course Approval Google Sheet, and go to File > Make a Copy.
  4. Save your copy, and include your full name in the filename.
  5. Use the “share” button at the top right to share the form with our study abroad advising liaison Dana Thomas (dcthoma4@ncsu.edu) at least 2 weeks before the Study Abroad Deadline.

Once you share your course approval Google Sheet, Dr. Thomas will check it over and communicate with appropriate faculty to obtain necessary course approvals. She will then fill out and sign your official course pre-approval form and email it to the COS Dean’s Office for their signature (copying you). The COS Dean’s Office will send your official course pre-approval form directly to the Study Abroad Office once they sign it.

Other important information:

  1. Minor coursework must be approved by your minor department. You should contact them for instructions.
  2. If you are going on an NC State faculty led program where you are enrolled in NC State courses you do not need to do a separate course approval as outlined below. Just talk to your advisor about how the courses will fit into your degree.

What Happens After I Get Back?

  1. Follow instructions on this page to have your transcript from your international institution sent to NC State’s Study Abroad Office.
  2. Once it is received, the Study Abroad Office will upload this transcript into your Documents section of MyPack Portal (FYI – this process can take some time).
  3. Soon after it is uploaded into your Documents, Dr. Thomas will receive an automated notice from Study Abroad stating that your transcript is in the system.
  4. Dr. Thomas then uses your official course pre-approval form and your international transcript to fill out and submit a form that causes your study abroad credits to appear in your Degree Audit.

Contact the Study Abroad Office if you have any issues sending over your international transcript. Contact Dana Thomas (dcthoma4@ncsu.edu) if your transcript is in MyPack but your credits aren’t showing up in your Degree Audit.
